Das Ger\u00e4t wurde Maser genannt, was f\u00fcr &#8220;Microwave Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation&#8221; stand. Das Ger\u00e4t war bahnbrechend, und Townes teilte sich 1964 den Nobelpreis f\u00fcr Physik f\u00fcr seine Arbeit mit Aleksandr Mikhaylovich Prokhorov und Nikolay Gennadiyevich Basov, die zur gleichen Zeit in Moskau an demselben Prinzip gearbeitet hatten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nachdem die Anwendungen f\u00fcr Masers ihr Limit erreicht hatten, begannen Townes und Gordon Gould (ein Doktorand von Columbia) separate Forschungsprojekte zur Durchf\u00fchrung der gleichen Stimulation f\u00fcr infrarotes oder sichtbares Licht, im Gegensatz zu Mikrowellenstrahlung. Aus ihren Bem\u00fchungen wurde der Laser oder &#8220;Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation&#8221; geboren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Die ersten Laser, die aus dieser Forschung hervorgingen, waren Festk\u00f6rperlaser, die Chromatome in einem Rubinkristall verwendeten, um Licht mit der richtigen Wellenl\u00e4nge zu fokussieren und zu erzeugen. Sp\u00e4tere Forschung w\u00fcrde Laser aus Gas (meist Helium-Neon), Fl\u00fcssigkeiten und sogar Halbleitern schaffen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Die Anwendungen f\u00fcr Laser und ihre gerichtete, geradlinige Energie, sowohl im sichtbaren als auch im infraroten Bereich, sind in den letzten 70 Jahren zahllos geworden.
